May 15th - May 24th...Holy Cow, We're Almost to the Finish Line!

WEEKLY MESSAGE
Its hard to believe that we are down to just a few short days left
in the 2016-2017 School Year.  The year has flown by, I swear
just yesterday it was Christmas Break and our teachers were making
preparations for the second half of the year.  Our students have all
but wrapped up SAGE testing, and are becoming very "antsy"
at the prospect of Summer Vacation!  Last week we celebrated
Teacher Appreciation at Fossil Ridge...special Thank You to the PTA for
providing wonderful breakfast, lunch, and goodies throughout the week!
The teachers and staff at Fossil Ridge have worked so hard individually
and collaboratively throughout the year to ensure that ALL students
are learning at high levels by providing each student what he/she
needs to be successful.  As a result of the dedicated work of our teachers,
and the EXCELLENT effort of our students, our kiddos have soared
during the 2016-2017 school year!

Our Fine Arts students have been recognized at both the district, community,
and state level for outstanding achievement in Choir, Theater, Band, Orchestra,
and the Visual Arts.  We have had 6th and 7th grade students win local and state
essay contests.  Our Math Counts competitive team dominated district events,
included numerous "top 10" students, and even a couple of 1st Place awards.
The Robotics program at Fossil Ridge continued to grow and provided students
the opportunity to extend their learning and critical thinking skills in
the Lego League Arena.  We have had gymnasts, BMX riders, track athletes,
and members of various team sports experience amazing success throughout
the past year.  Academically, we have seen incredible growth, and high levels of
learning across the board at Fossil Ridge Intermediate.  Our students are being
challenged more each year, expectations continue to increase, and with
that our students continue to rise to the occasion and accomplish things never
thought possible.  This academic success, paired with a commitment to EXCELLENCE
by our faculty and staff has brought state and national recognition to Fossil Ridge,
including earning an "A" School Grade from the State of Utah, recognition as a
Solution Tree Model PLC School, and designation as a NASSP Breakthrough
School.  This recognition comes as a result of the process we are all engaged in at
Fossil Ridge Intermediate.  It is understood that we can never be fully satisfied
with our work and our journey.  As a result, our faculty and staff will continue
to celebrate the teaching and learning process, and work diligently to chase perfection.

It has certainly been a great year at Fossil Ridge.  Together our students, faculty,
staff, and parents have done their absolute best to make every day "A GREAT DAY TO
BE A T-REX!"  Thank You all for "BEING EXCELLENT!"

May 1st - May 5th, 2017...Have a Marvelous May!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
This past weekend I had the opportunity to support Mrs. Gubler
and several of our Art students at the Kayenta Arts Festival.  Our
6th and 7th grade students were participating in the "Chalk Art"
category with other schools, organizations, and even professional
artists.  As I walked around and took in all the different pieces of
art, I couldn't help but be a proud Principal watching our students
having such fun and working collaboratively to produce amazingly
colorful and detailed art work.  Our kids' hard work and energy paid
off as they were awarded both 1st and 2nd Place in the 6th-9th grade
category.  The experience of our Art students on Saturday is but one
example of the importance and success of the Fine Arts programs at
Fossil Ridge.  We put a premium on the Arts, encourage our students to
dive in, and provide them with unmatched learning experiences.
Many times, high stakes testing has overshadowed the arts, and in some
districts the arts no longer get the necessary funding to remain viable.  At
Fossil Ridge, the arts play a vital role in ensuring that we educate the
"whole child." Experiences in the arts have allowed hundreds of students
to shine, find themselves, and taste success outside of the academic classroom.
Whether  Band (Mr. Nielsen), Theater (Mrs. Bosen), Choir (Mrs. Sheeran),
Orchestra (Mr. Candland),or Visual Arts (Mrs. Gubler), our students are
striving for perfection under the direction of amazingly talented teachers!
If our students were to take a Fine Arts SAGE test, there is no question they
would ALL score a 4!

April 10th - April 13th, 2017...Short and Sweet Week!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
I believe you can draw many parallels between education and athletics, and
between teaching and learning in the classroom and on the playing field.
I was a Head Baseball Coach for 15 years.  I had the opportunity to coach many
different players, with a wide range of abilities and needs, some were highly
skilled and talented, while others had to spend extra time improving their skills
to become successful.  I coached hundreds of players, and each player needed
something entirely different to be successful. As coaches, we couldn't afford
to show up to practice and coach everyone the same, our players were at different
levels and had specific and individualized needs.  We had to recognize the most
fundamental skills that all players needed to master to be successful on game day.
We had to determine the skill level and understanding of all twenty-five players.
We instructed our players on those skills...some needed extra time and practice,
others were able to challenge themselves to explore and learn additional baseball
skills.  From there, we followed a specific learning cycle that included practice,
feedback, practice, feedback, assessment of skills, feedback, and finally the process
ended on game day. During the week, as a coaching staff, we had taken advantage
of our time, exhausted all options to ensure that every player was prepared with
the skills necessary to be a successful player and teammate, and when game
day came, it was time for the players and team to put their skills on display.

This process is identical to the teaching and learning process at Fossil Ridge.
We have 950 students, and our purpose is to "Ensure that ALL Students are
Learning at the Highest Possible Levels." We refer to this process as the GVC
Learning Process.  The process begins with teacher teams working together
to determine what specific and measurable Learning Targets and GVCs
(Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum) our students need to be successful.  The
next step in the process is to use instructional strategies that effectively meet the
needs of all students.  Practice follows instruction, and Common Formative
Assessments are used by teachers to determine the level of understanding for
each and every student. Students that show proficiency or mastery are provided
with extended learning opportunities, while students that need extra time,
help, or resources are provided with targeted interventions in class and
during REACH Time. This teaching and learning process aims to provide each
student "what they need" to succeed at Fossil Ridge.  The ultimate goal of our
learning process is to ensure that ALL students are able to either master or show
proficiency in the specific Learning Targets and GVCs.

Whether its baseball or education, teachers or coaches, players or students, we
must remember that ultimately its about the process and the journey, for
without an investment in the process, success on game day never comes!

April 3rd - April 7th...Happy Spring

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
The 2016-2017 school year is flying by, and before we realize it summer will
here.  Spring is a busy time of year for our students, faculty, and staff.  SAGE
end of level testing started last week, with 6th Grade Language Arts, and will
conclude in May with Math.  As the Principal at Fossil Ridge, I am confident
that our students have learned the necessary skills and concepts to be successful!
Our teachers have worked together in content area teams throughout the year to
create GVC's (Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum), Learning Targets, effective
instructional strategies, common assessments that check for student understanding,
and REACH Time interventions and extensions strategies.  This Learning Cycle
enables our teacher teams to meet the needs of each individual student, no
matter their current level of proficiency.  At Fossil Ridge our purpose is to
"Ensure that All Students are Learning at High Levels."  We are all
committed to doing whatever it takes to guarantee student achievement.
So, when you get a chance, talk with your student about what they are learning
here at Fossil Ridge.  You will be amazed at all the skills and concepts your student
has become proficient in...let them share this new knowledge, let them explain
how REACH Time has helped them as a student, and sit back and allow your
student to pat himself/herself on the back for a job well done!  Have a Great
Week, and as always...BE EXCELLENT!
