The picture below cuts to the heart of Equality vs. Equity in the educational environment. If equality means giving everyone the same resources/opportunities, equity means giving each student access to the resources/opportunities they need to learn and thrive...otherwise known as "meeting individual students where they are at in order to get them were they need to be." At Fossil Ridge we have 920 total students, teachers generally have approximately 150 students on their roles, and each child is unique; with different skills, abilities, life experiences, and backgrounds. It can be extraordinarily difficult for educators to meet the needs of ALL students, especially students with disabilities, students from poverty, minority students, and students lacking pre-requisite skills necessary for academic success. If we’re committed to the success of every child, and truly believe that "All students can/will learn at high levels", we must acknowledge the uneven playing field that exists for many students. We must continue to hold ALL students to high expectations, and we must ensure that EVERY student gets the opportunities and resources they need to be successful...ALL STUDENTS MUST BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE GREAT!!
